What is  Stroke ? - From the National Stroke Association - Article Recommended by Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj

http://www.stroke.org/site/PageServer?pagename=stroke

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of adult disability.

Up to 80% of strokes are preventable; you can prevent a stroke!
What is a stroke?
A stroke or "brain attack" occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery (a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the body) or a blood vessel (a tube through which the blood moves through the body) breaks, interrupting blood flow to an area of the brain.  When either of these things happen, brain cells begin to die and brain damage occurs.
When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost.  These abilities include speech, movement and memory.  How a stroke patient is affected depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged.
Brain
For example, someone who has a small stroke may experience only minor problems such as weakness of an arm or leg.  People who have larger strokes may be paralyzed on one side or lose their ability to speak.  Some people recover completely from strokes, but more than 2/3 of survivors will have some type of disability.

Stroke Data in the United States

STROKE DATA IN THE UNITED STATES

Stroke ranks as the nation’s third foremost cause of death, trailing only heart disease and cancer.  The American Heart Association (AHA reported in 2008 show that the annual incidence of new or recurrent stroke in the United States is roughly 780,000, with about 600,000 of these strokes being first attacks.
Among adults age 20 and older, the likely prevalence of stroke in 2005 was 5.8 million in the U.S., resulting in >150,000 mortalitiesper annum, with 4.8 million living current stroke survivors . The age-adjusted stroke hospitalization rate grew 18.6% (from 560 to 664 per 100 000) during 1988 to 1997, while total stroke hospitalizations increased 38.6% (from 592,811 to 821,760 annually).
Consistent with the pathophysiology and symptoms of stroke, stroke is a leading cause of adult impairment, with 20% of stroke survivors requiring institutional care after 3 months and up to 30% being severely and permanently disabled.
